Two color wheels are in common use based on different sets of three primary colors which appear equidistant on the wheel at 0°, 120°, and 240°. The newer RGB color wheel (Figure 1) often used in television and computer work is based on red, green, and blue as the primary colors. The older RYB color wheel (Figure 2) often used in art and interior decorating is based on red, yellow, and blue as the primary colors.

Halfway in between the primary colors are secondary colors and halfway in between primary colors and secondary colors are tertiary colors. These colors may exist as pure colors or as mixtures of other colors. For example, light that we perceive as green might be pure green light or a combination of yellow and blue light and we can't perceive the difference because our brains combine the individual sensations into a single perception.
